Let’s be honest: our primary bedroom often gets the short end of the stick when it comes to home decor. We might think that since it’s just us using it, it doesn’t need the same attention as other areas of our home. But really, our primary bedroom should be a place that makes us feel calm, comfortable, and that we maybe even a little bit luxurious. It’s where we start and end our days, and being in a beautiful space that makes us feel at easy is the best way to set a positive tone for the day.
The good news is that a bedroom refresh doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. If your space already has the big ticket items, just updating the bedroom decor will make a huge difference. So, if you need a bedroom refresh on a budget, I have some easy and affordable ideas to help you.
Lighten things up
Lighting is an absolute game-changer in bedroom decor. It has the power to completely transform the ambiance of your space. While considering what type of lighting is best for your bedroom, think about both design and function.
Having multiple light sources in your bedroom will make the space feel more complete. That could mean having a ceiling light plus task lights in areas where you may need a little bit of extra brightness like a bedside lamp or sconces near your artwork.
I love these sleek bedside lamps that not only serve a functional purpose but also add a stylish touch to your bedroom. They’ll allow you to read the latest must read horror book before bedtime and also add some character into your space.
Dramatic drapery will make the bedroom look luxurious
In most bedrooms, the windows take up quite a bit of wall space and can be a room’s focal point. You can install dramatic drapery to draw even more attention to the windows and add color to your bedroom. Bold, colorful drapes in the bedroom will completely transform your space and give your room the polish it deserves. Even something as simple as plain black or white drapes will instantly add color while blocking out unwanted light.
The types of drapery you can add to your bedroom are endless. You’ll find florals, geometric designs, mural-esque drapes, and, of course, solid-colored window coverings that will make your bedroom look brand new. They also come in a variety of price points, so you will be able to find something that aligns with your budget.
Use texture to help add character to your bedroom
It’s easy for bedrooms to feel one-dimensional. Adding texture will give the space more character and will add color to your bedroom. For example, mixing fluffy throw pillows with a sleek wooden headboard combines two different textures and will make your bedroom look more layered and interesting.
One of my favorite ways to add texture to a room is by adding multi-colored area rugs. With so many varieties of rugs available, finding one that matches your color scheme and personality should be no problem. Rugs are easy to design around and won’t demand too much attention – allowing you to include other bold accessories throughout your room. At the same time, if you want to add texture without it taking over the space, you can opt for a neutral colored rug that will blend in, but still add dimension to your space.
Dress up your walls
Updating your wall art is a simple yet effective way to breathe new life into your bedroom. Art doesn’t have to be expensive to make a statement. There are numerous online retailers offering affordable yet stylish options.
In my bedroom, I found vintage travel posters on Etsy. I chose prints from places we have visited so they had meaning and bring back memories from some really fun trips. I looked for posters that were similar in color and also complemented the rest of my bedroom decor. I think the total price for the simple black frames and the prints was about $30 – not even kidding. That small addition to our bedroom completely changed the mood and made me like my bedroom again.
Ready to refresh your bedroom?
Switching up the bedroom accessories with affordable options is a fun and easy way to refresh your bedroom decor.
New bedside lamps, artwork, curtains, and a rug are my go-to items when I need to refresh a space, but throw pillows and blankets go a long way, too.
Since these items don’t necessarily have to last forever, it’s okay to buy more trendy items and switch them out when your taste changes.
