Simple Ways to Add Whimsy to Your Backyard Garden

    May 22, 2025 by Beverly

    Spread the love

Magic Garden. Enchanted Garden. Hippie Garden. Cottage Garden. There are SO many names for a whimsical garden, but each of them describes the same beautiful, eye-appealing space. A whimsical garden is full of vibrant colors and unexpected features that make the space feel magical. If you want to create a whimsical flower garden in your backyard, you don’t need acres of land or an unlimited budget, but there are a few key features you should focus on.

    Add Garden Art

Gnomes are adorable, and you should have one hidden somewhere, but there are plenty of other options for whimsical garden art. You could try mosaic stepping stones, quirky birdhouses – maybe even try to build one yourself, or a bird bath.

    Include a Variety of Flowers

You can’t have a whimsical flower garden without, well, flowers! You can plant them in raised flower beds, along the borders of your yard, or in mismatched pottery. These are some of the must-have whimsical flower garden plants, according to experts:

    Create a Secret Corner

A whimsical flower garden should feel like an oasis from the crazy world we live in. A place to escape to and get lost in a book or write in your journal. Creating a secret space for you to escape to and write in your journal will be well worth the effort! You can do this by tucking a bench beneath a tree or by placing a small bistro set in a bare area among tall flowers.

    Use Lighting

Fairy lights, solar lanterns, and twinkle strands give your garden an enchanted glow after sunset and are an absolute must-have in a whimsical flower garden.

    Embrace Nature

Encourage butterflies and bees to spend time in your garden by planting native flowers, and let some wildflowers grow freely for that slightly overgrown storybook look.

    Let’s Get Whimsical

The best part about a whimsical flower garden is that it doesn’t have to be perfect, in fact, it’s better that it isn’t. Remember, a magical, enchanting garden takes some time to grow and become the space you’re dreaming of.  So, don’t get stressed or try to rush the process. While you’re waiting for your garden to grow, focus on the smaller details like seating, lighting, and artwork, because that’s where the magic is!
