I may not be an actual interior designer, but after studying trends and writing about home design for the last 6 years, I have learned a thing or two. I’ve interviewed designers over the years and have started to pick up on their mindset and how they determine what’s the next big thing in home design trends.
Now, I firmly believe that in your house, you should do what YOU like and not worry about what is trendy. But if you’re interested in learning more about what designers are doing, here are my predictions for the top home design trends in 2025.
Dramatic Walls
If you look at the color of the year choices for 2025, you’ll see a theme – bold, dramatic colors. After so many years of having lifeless beige and gray spaces, there is a strong desire to change it up. That’s why I think dramatic walls will be one of the big home design trends in 2025.
What I love most about this trend is that we aren’t just limiting ourselves to a bold accent wall. No – with this home design trend, the entire room will be color drenched in your desired paint color. For example, using deep reds or purples will transform a dull space into something that feels brand new.
Arches
Whether you’re planning a major remodel or just looking for updated staples throughout your home, don’t sleep on the arch. Arches make a space look more interesting, and they feel more inviting than harsh, sharp lines. If you’re going to go big, add arches to your hallways or your front door. They will completely elevate the space and make it feel more customized than the standard squared edges.
If you’re just in the market for smaller upgrades, arched mirrors in the bathroom is a great place to start. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. They will change the feel of your bathroom and make it feel a bit more elegant. If you want something even smaller, get some arched picture frames to add throughout the home. They can be used for larger pieces of wall art, or smaller photos on a bedside table to shelf.
Cozy, Unique Spaces
Home design trends continue to evolve, moving past the open-concept, industrial look that has been popular for the last decade or so. Maybe it’s a reaction to the world around us, which is, putting it gently, a mess. When we come home, we crave a sense of safety, peace, and, above all, comfort.
Creating a cozy home isn’t hard. It’s about adding different textures, like draping a chunky knit blanket or plush throw pillows on your couch or accent chairs, to make your space feel more inviting. It’s about avoiding harsh overhead lights and opting for softer, warmer lighting like cute table lamps and candlelight to make a room feel calm. It’s also about personalizing your space with family photos or artwork to make it feel more like home.
Coffee Bars
An easy to implement home design trend is the coffee bar. This space in your kitchen designated just for coffee is both functional and adds character to your home. Since more of us are looking for ways to simplify our routines and save some money, an at-home coffee bar where everything is in one spot and not mixed with other kitchen staples will be another big home design trends in 2025.
To create a coffee bar, find a little nook in your kitchen where you can store and prepare all the necessities for your morning brew. You’ll want enough space to display the expensive espresso maker you bought because you swore it would motivate you to drink coffee at home – don’t ask me how I know. If you don’t have an extra cabinet and counter space, you could pick up a buffet cabinet or bar cart but use it to store mugs, beans, flavoring, and whatever else you use in the morning.
Mixed Metals
Mixed metals have been a home design trend for a few years now, but I think the trend will continue well into the new year. There are so many spaces where metals are used – light fixtures, plumbing, mirrors, picture frames, towel bars – the list goes on and on. Feeling like you need to stick to just one metal for all of these pieces is silly. As long as you do it thoughtfully, mixing metals will look fantastic.
When mixing metals, it’s a good idea to stick to two different finishes in a space and make sure that the metals of the same function are the same. So, you could have brass plumbing fixtures but bronze cabinet pulls and door handles. If you want to do something a little out of the box, you could use the same type of metal but in different finishes. In your bedroom, that could look like using matte gold picture frames, a polished gold lamp beside the bed, and vintage gold hardware on your dresser.
Retro décor
Continuing with the ‘cozy’ theme is retro décor. Funky colors and materials, often found at antique stores and thrift shops, have become a home design must. Creating a space that kind of makes you think of your grandma’s house but with a more modern twist is a fun and creative way to design a space.
I am a huge fan of antique stores and love picking up unique pieces of art and trinkets to include in my decorations. Lately, I’ve noticed antique and thrift stores carrying a lot more vintage furniture which is great because the living room is a great place to get retro. Buying second-hand can be a time-consuming treasure hunt, so if you don’t have the time, you could invest in some new furniture with retro-vibes. Look for pieces with unique shapes and sizes. Colors like orange and green paired with rattan and brass accents will make your space look creative and lively.
What Are Your Favorite Home Design Trends In 2025?
Overall, the home design trends in 2025 are about creating unique spaces that are also functional. They’re about creating drama and bringing life back into our sad, beige homes. To me, home design should be a reflection of your personality and interests. I like including travel souvenirs and my kids’ artwork in my home decor – are either of those “trendy”? No, but I’m still going to do it. I am thinking about adding more color to my home, though – and when I do, I will share the updates with you.
